PUBLIC NOTICE

HAZARD REDUCTION ACTIVITIES – Gnowangerup Shire

 

Residents and visitors of Gnowangerup are advised that Contractors and staff from Shire of Gnowangerup will be conducting park land clearing and burning in areas around Gnowangerup, Borden and Ongerup

PURPOSE:           To commence the process of establishing low fuel buffer zones around assets within the town sites to reduce the potential for a bushfire impacting the town site.

Volunteers and staff from Gnowangerup, Borden, Ongerup’s BFB’s and Shire of Gnowangerup staff will be conducting hazards reduction burns in the months to come with consideration of winds to minimise smoke from entering town sites.

DATE:                    Beginning Monday, 1st May 2024 for a period of approximately 8-12 weeks.

LOCATION:         The areas showed in yellow as detailed below in maps below:

                               Borden                                                    Gnowangerup                                             Ongerup

                

WHAT TO DO DURING AND AFTER HAZARD REDUCTION ACTIVITIES:

  • Traffic speed restrictions of 40kph will apply with traffic management signs installed on Day of the burns.
  • Road closures may be in place on the day of burning activities for the safety of Fire Fighters operating within the area.
  • Motorists are asked to have their headlights on when driving through the area and drive to the conditions as the smoke hazard will remain for a number of days after the burn is completed.
  • Abide by all directions of Fire Fighters/Emergency Services personnel on scene.
  • Smoke may affect visibility and air quality in and around Gnowangerup Borden or Ongerup on the day itself and the days following. Residents and visitors with any respiratory conditions are reminded to have their medication close by or on them as a precaution.
  • Fire Fighters will be conducting patrols of the treatment areas in the days following each prescribed burn.
