Ongerup Refuse Site – Reopening
The Ongerup Refuse Site will reopen on Saturday 25 October 2025 after the fire was extinguished at the general waste trench (landfill).
Due to this fire effective immediately the Shire will increase enforcement of restrictions that currently apply.  The fire was extremely difficult to manage given the amount of steel placed in the trench.  This included 1000 litre chemical shuttles placed in the trench either whole or used as rubbish bins.  In addition, tyres were also dumped in the trench which increased the intensity of the fire and a gas bottle which was also illegally dumped which exploded while volunteers were extinguishing the fire.
Please note that the refuse site cannot take certain items which are listed on the front gate at all the Shire Refuse sites as part of our legal requirements to operate this service for the community.
The current restrictions that the public need to adhere to and will be enforced include:
- All empty 1000 litre chemical shuttles can only be left at the scrap metal collection area.
- Shuttles used as rubbish bins can be emptied into the general waste trench, but the shuttle must be either taken home or placed at the scrap metal collected area emptied.
- All other steel needs to be separated from general waste and placed in the scrap metal collection area.
- Tyres are not accepted at any of the Shire refuse sites and must be taken to an authorized tyre dealer for recycling.
- Green waste and building rubble also have dedicated areas for disposal and are not to be placed in the general household waste trench.
- The opening hours of all refuse sites will be reduced from 7:00pm closing to 5:00pm closing so access to the refuse site can be better monitored by CCTV.
Listed below are items that are currently not accepted at the Shire refuse sites.  If you require additional information or clarification, please contain the Shire 9827 1007or use the QR code near the front gate swipe card scanner.
Commencing immediately, the Shire will issue penalties for illegal dumping.
