Ride Wild, Ride Safe – Free Community Cycling Workshops

The Shire of Gnowangerup has secured funding through the Road Safety Commission to deliver Ride Wild, Ride Safe, a community cycling initiative designed to help local children and families ride safely and confidently.

With Wild Gravel heading into its third year, cycling participation across the Shire has grown significantly. More local children and families are getting on bikes, and feedback from the community and local Police highlighted the importance of making sure this increased participation is supported by appropriate safety equipment, bike knowledge and safe riding skills.

As part of Ride Wild, Ride Safe, the Shire has purchased a new bike helmet for every child in the Shire of Gnowangerup, with the first round of workshops commencing next week.

What will happen at the workshops?

The workshops are free and will include helmet giveaways and the opportunity for children to decorate and personalise their new helmets.

Bike experts will also be available to check and help repair bikes, demonstrate basic bike maintenance and show children and families how to look after their bikes.

Practical bike riding sessions will help children develop their skills and confidence, with a focus on safe riding behaviours.

Gnowangerup - Thursday 17 September

Gnowangerup Sporting Complex

4.30pm–5.30pm – Children up to 8 years
5.30pm–6.30pm – Children aged 8+

Borden and Ongerup 16 and 17 September

Workshops will also be delivered at Borden and Ongerup schools on Wednesday and Thursday, giving children across the Shire the opportunity to participate.

A second round of workshops will be held during the second week of the school holidays, with further details to be announced.

Don't have a bike?

Children do not need to miss out because they don't currently have access to a bike.

Families are encouraged to contact Penny Wells at penny.wells@gnowangerup.wa.gov.au. There may be options available to assist with access to a bike so children can take part.

Building safer riders

Ride Wild, Ride Safe is about more than preparing for Wild Gravel. The initiative aims to remove barriers to participation, build confidence among new and returning riders, improve knowledge of bike maintenance and encourage safe riding behaviours that children can carry with them every time they get on their bike.
