FORMATION OF A HOUSING AND ACCOMMODATION WORKING GROUP

Invitation for interested parties to join with the Shire

At it most recent Ordinary Meeting the Council resolved the following:

COUNCIL RESOLUTION

Moved: Cr K O’Keeffe                    Seconded: Cr F Hmeljak

0721.84          That Council:

  1. Advertises for interested persons to join with the Shire in forming a Housing and Accommodation Working Group to develop a strategy to address the shortage of housing and accommodation in the three townsites, and to develop a lobbying position to pursue the State and Federal Governments fix the financial disincentives that are causing market failure in the Shire.
  2. Specifically seeks involvement from all three towns, and
  3. Considers the involvement of Councillors in the working group once the public call for members has been completed.

Consequently, the Shire is seeking interested persons to join the working group to assist in developing a strategy and lobbying position to address the accommodation and housing needs of the three townsites in the Shire. The focus will be on housing for long term workers and their families, worker accommodation units, and short-term accommodation for contractors and consultants. Applicants from all three towns are encouraged to apply so that all interests can be addressed.

The market failure in rural WA for housing caused by limited supplies of suitable land connected to services, and the high cost of development of land principally caused by onerous head works costs for utilities and services is a matter which the working group will address by developing a lobbying strategy to pursue State and Federal representatives for solutions to these disincentives.

Applications to join the working group should be in writing and identify the interest of the applicant in the issues and availability to attend meetings. Preference for meeting times should also be addressed. Applications can be sent by e-mail to gnpshire@gnowangerup.wa.gov.au or by mail to Shire of Gnowangerup, 28 Yougenup Road, Gnowangerup, WA 6335 and be received by 4:00pm Monday 6th September 2021.
